Pawâkan Macbeth – Fall 2017 Production

A Cree Tragedy by Reneltta Arluk

Developed by Theatre Prospero and Akpik Theatre from 2015 – 2017, co-produced with Akpik Theatre in November 2017 to the acclaim of sold out houses; Reneltta Arluk’s innovative adaptation of Macbeth is set in Plains Cree territory among the plagues, fights and famines of the 1870’s. Pawâkan Macbeth transforms Shakespeare’s darkest play using Cree cosmology. This includes the Wihtiko, a terrifying spirit that consumes a human being’s existence. The more this spirit eats, the hungrier it gets. Arluk worked with Cree speakers and elders to develop the play’s Cree language elements and protocols. The play combines Shakespeare’s language, modern English, and Cree-infused poetry and prose.
