We are a professional company based in Edmonton, Alberta and we tour around the province of Alberta, as well as providing programming based in Edmonton. All of our work is based in poetry, classics, rich language and/or myth.
We bring vibrant Shakespeare and other classical plays to schools around the province of Alberta through our Artists-In-Residence programs that culminate in a performance where the students perform with our professional actors for peers and the community.
There is funding available from the Alberta Foundation for the Arts for our various lengths of residencies.
We provide a creative and collaborative environment for students, K to 12, to work with each other and our professional company. We teach specialized theatre skills (stage combat, voice, storytelling, dance, clowning, improvisation, scene study, understanding Shakespearean text, technical theatre and design).
Many of the students that we have worked with in the last 15 years have gone on to make considerable contributions to the arts and arts education. We don’t just create art in the school; we help to create artists in the community at large. Link to Testimonials.
Our Edmonton shows provide Theatre for Young Audience matinees of our season plays. In addition, we provide public performances of our season’s plays.
Theatre Prospero is also the home of the Thousand Faces Festival. This festival provides opportunities for artists of diverse cultures to create and share works of art inspired by the mythologies of the world with a broad audience. Each year we include our touring Shakespeare production along with many other diverse performances all created to express some aspect of mythic understanding.
